  • 7:30pm Talk from Simon Carr: Climate Change and the Landscape of Cumbria

The most recent reports from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change present a bleak picture of the nature of predicted global climate change through the remainder of the 21st Century. But how can we translate the headline statements of rising global temperatures and changing patterns of precipitation into something that relates to our own homes, families and communities. In this talk, I will explore what predicted climate change could mean for our landscapes and communities of Cumbria in the lifetimes of ourselves, our children and grandchildren. We will follow the journey of a single drop of water as it travels through the landscape of Cumbria to see how climate change has altered our entire Earth system. I will also outline what the research evidence suggests can or should be done to limit potential damage and make our societies and environments more resilient to the coming changes.

Simon Carr is Associate Professor in Geography in the Institute of Science & Environment at the University of Cumbria, based in Ambleside. His research explores how scientific expertise of the structure and function of landscapes can inform wider environmental issues such as environmental restoration and the impacts of climate change. Increasingly, Simon undertakes research that straddles the science-policy interface, particularly focusing on knowledge exchange, notably with respect to facing up to the challenges of climate change.

We would welcome new members to get involved in local projects.
